All Geared UP: SOBO Gear List

July 7th is the day, the day I hike Mt Katahdin and embark through the notorious 100 mile wilderness to kick off my 2016 SOBO Appalachian Trail thru hike! As exciting as it is, it’s just as exciting planning for it and figuring out all the little details and knick-knacks that I will bring.

Here is my gear list-

I’m hiking with the Gregory Baltoro 75 liter, the ultra light weight aficionados are probably clenching their teeth at such a big bag, but it’s roomy and comfortable. The size of it doesn’t bug me whatsoever.

For my camping system I’ve decided to bring a hammock. My first thought was to bring a tent, which is still a viable option. Yet the weight I will save by bringing a hammocking system is worth while, and most notably the advantageous aspect of saving pack room.

My hammock is an Eno Singlenest– a great purchase/high quality and inexpensive costing 60$. I also have a Eno bug net and rain tarp.

I have a 30 degree REI sleeping bag. Although not name brand, REI makes some damn good products.

For clothes which I’m really not picky about, as long as I’m not butt ass naked, heres what I have…

I’ve got a solid pair of hiking pants that can zip off at the knee from Gander Mtn. I’ve also got a solid pair of Nike basketball shorts for lounging around camp and sleeping in.

My Mom bought me an adequate Nike running shirt for Christmas that wicks away sweat. I also have a long sleeve shirt that is odor free and wicks away sweat but will simultaneously keep you warm. These will be reversible in regards to hiking and clothes for camp-depending upon weather.

I have a Northface rain jacket, which was a great pickup coming in at 100 bucks. A down winter jacket from REI, also a 100 bucks that keeps you very toasty.

Two pairs of spandex Nike shorts as underwear. 3 pairs of socks, 2 of which are Darn Tough Vermont socks which I will hike in, and one which is Smartwool as a dry pair for camp.

A bugnet and bandana.

For shoes I’m going with Oboz and a pair of Tevas. Both great shoes.

For my cooking system I went with a pocket rocket, and MSR single person stove system.

For water purification I’m bringing a Steripen, this was an important choice for me, debating heavily between a sawyer squeeze, tablets or bleach I felt that Steripens would result in the least chemicals and is easy to use.

I’ve got a Nalgene water bottle and will pick up another water bottle soon as well, probably a Smartwater bottle or Gatorade. The Nalgene bottle is important, and my base bottle because my Steripen fits in the hole of it, whereas some water bottles don’t have holes big enough-like a Gatorade bottle. This means I will purify my water from the Nalgene first and the dump that water into the Gatorade bottle.

For tactical items I will be bringing a small bottle of Gold Bond powder for chafing, a small bottle of campsuds, a bottle which includes allergy pills, ibuprofens and nasal decongestants.

I have a small first aid kit, moleskins and earplugs.

A headlight, which is nothing special and 50 yards of rope to hang food with.

Toilet paper which is held in a plastic bag closed together with duck tape-in that bag there is also hand sanitizer, Vaseline, a toothbrush/toothpaste, and a washcloth.

I have a pair of hiking poles-which I really hate and will possibly send back because they don’t work well with me but might be useful for the river fords in Maine.

A sick watch my Aunt and Uncle got me that also has a compass on it, shoutout to them.

Lastly I have a shovel to fill in holes, a selfie stick to tape YouTube videos with, a small moleskin notebook and some bug spray.
This will all be held in Sea to Summit bags that are water proof and keen for organization.
