Danny Percefull

Hi! I'm Danny. I play the piano and make music on Broadway (mostly), but I'm giving that a few months off while I attempt a northbound thru-hike of the AT starting in March 2018. New York City is crazy and exhausting, and it's cute to think that living in the woods for a few months won't also be crazy and exhausting. I'll be the guy with the rose quartz hanging off his pack who also happens to be singing show tunes.

Being Where I Am – Wherever That May Be

Being Where I Am – Wherever That May Be

Asheville was so excellent. Being in Chili Dog’s (Paul’s) house was more relaxing than I expected it to be. There’s something so calming about being in a home environment (complete with pets) that is so much more restful than a loud, vaguely dirty hostel. We ate our way around town and even though we all professed to wanting vegetables, we ate nothing of the sort. Chili Dog even cooked two fantastic meals for us, which was a treat, as he is a trained chef! I left Asheville on Monday feeling like I wish I could have stayed longer and seen more. And I was anxious about what the next three days of hiking to Hot Springs would bring for my foot. I’ve always loved leaving a place with the desire to return and experience more, and I’d get to come back to Asheville sooner than I’d like.

North Carolina and the Smokies: Changes in Altitude

North Carolina and the Smokies: Changes in Altitude

As I prepared for my hike, I read so much about how Georgia is challenging and how many people it takes out. I actually found the terrain to be pretty gentle. The weather was a different issue entirely, but the path itself didn’t take me to the edge. North Carolina has been the real wake up call

An Exciting First Week on the AT

An Exciting First Week on the AT

I have made it through my first week on the AT, and I’d say I did pretty damn well. Sure, I slept three nights in shelters, one in my tent, one in a cabin, one in a hostel, and one by myself in a hotel (it was my birthday - treat yourself!). And yes, I took a zero on day 4. But I earned that zero (more on that later). I wish I could go on and on about the epic beauty of the mountains of north Georgia, but I’ve mostly been hiking in a hazy cloudy fog situation. Still, despite all of that, I love it.

Starting Tomorrow, and Yes, I’m Nervous

Starting Tomorrow, and Yes, I’m Nervous

I cannot believe that tomorrow is Day 1! I’m experiencing a strange mix of apprehension and disbelief. I’ve spent the last two days staying with some friends in Atlanta, carrying on as if no major life changes are happening tomorrow. There’s a backpack filled with stuff in the corner of their guest room that needs to be sorted through, re-packed, and fretted over. But it was St. Patrick’s Day, so we should definitely go out for an extended day-drinking affair instead, right? My husband and I are heading up to Amicalola later today (probably after some sort of bottomless mimosa brunch), but it’s been quite the trip just getting to Georgia.

Thru-Hike Is Just Another Step Along My Path in Life

Thru-Hike Is Just Another Step Along My Path in Life

Hi everyone! I’m Danny, and I’ll be starting my northbound Appalachian Trail thru-hike in March. If 13 years in New York City can't get someone to thru-hike the AT, I don't know what can...
