Welcome to the North Country: Hanover, NH to Monson, ME
Much has happened since my last post when we walked through Vermont. We were greeted with extreme hospitality in the wonderful trail towns of Norwich, VT/Hanover, NH. We met and played croquet with the Ice Cream Man in Southern NH, began climbing real mountains with views, and trucked through the mud in the vast green and brown tunnel. We traveled together with great friends who we met along the way and with friends who came to visit from home. We made it through the Mahoosuc Notch, which AWOL claims is the most challenging or most fun mile of the entire AT. Really, just making it through Southern Maine entirely was a great accomplishment in our eyes.
The Homeland: North Adams, MA to Hanover, NH
Words cannot describe how happy we were to be in Vermont. As soon as we stepped foot into Vermont, everything changed for the better. It was a cloudy morning, and as soon as we crossed over the border, the sun peeked through the sky and the rest of the day was beautiful. After a steep climb, we basically walked along a ridge all day. It felt so great to finally be up high and to get some nice views with different scenery and landscapes.
Getting Over the Hump: Peekskill, NY to North Adams, MA
I had a hard time getting through Connecticut and Massachusetts. Connecticut seems to be the place where a lot of people hit a wall, and I unexpectedly hit that wall. It rained about 2-6 days a week for weeks on end, and the trail was filled with many "PUDs" - Pointless Ups and Downs (basically, big climbs with no view at the top). I was just plain run-down. It was the first time I really realized that the trail is not all "bunnies and rainbows". Despite this challenging time, there were definitely some great moments.
