Campo to Warner Springs: Hiker Portraits on the PCT

Well, the first week has been hard.  Getting up early is not my thing and that’s been a major hurdle for me.  Also, being a bartender the last 8 years, going to bed when the sun goes down feels abnormal.  Yesterday, (day 9) was the first day I woke up and felt like it was normal to hike to my next destination.

The people out here have been really nice.  It has been feeling a bit like high school because people tend to get in their groups; some are loud, some are quiet.  Some are friendly, some keep to themselves.  It’s definitely a lot different than I anticipated.

Finding my pace and deciding who I want to stick with in the evening has been hard.  I like a lot of different people – I feel dichotomized; I don’t want people to be upset if I decide to go with someone else for the evening.  I have to remind myself that I came out here for myself.  I need to hike my own hike and make decisions based on what satisfies my mind for the day.

The trail so far has been beautiful.  My very first day was hot as hell, but the rest have been somewhat manageable.  Even on a cool day the direct sunlight can be unkind.

The desert is interesting, weird and the plants are very unique.  Growing up in Northern California, I have a new found appreciation for this alien landscape.

It’s only day 10 today, and I’m sitting at the restaurant at the golf course in Warner Springs.  As I want to divulge more thoughts and things I’ve learned, I feel that’s something that will be more appropriate when I put in some more miles.

For now, here’s some of my favorite people and photos from my first 10 days on trail.
