Thru-Hike Gear vs. Expedition Gear
When I’m walking across a continent I prioritize ultralight gear. When I’m shooting for National Geographic Society in Central Asia, I prioritize durability and toughness.
The two are often simultaneously attainable, but there is a noticeable difference… especially when going with a kit by Fjallraven.
On shoots that require long hours of babysitting time-lapse cameras, hiding with a long lens to capture wildlife, or galloping for miles on horseback, I favor dependability over ultralight for my gear. While being that far out and not always on the move, my life and career can literally depend on it.
For a particularly tough shoot last fall on the Mongolian Steppe, I could only fill one bag with outdoor gear and the other with production equipment.
The pants and jacket below are the essentials that kept me warm and comfortable, and were able to stand up to the long duration and elements of the shoot.

Have you or do you know anyone who has used a Fjallraven pack for thru hiking? I’m planning on doing the PCT from Mexico to Canada next April (2016) and am leaning towards the Kajka 55 Women’s pack, but can’t find any reviews of it specifically for long distances.
