taking on the lists: AT 2017

While kneedeep in the prep stage for my upcoming thru-hike, I took Zach’s advice and made my own AT lists (as recommended in his book – READ IT if you haven’t already).

Here you go y’all!

I am thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail because…

  • I like accomplishing big goals
  • I have my health now, so why put it off further
  • I want to feel alone for a while – builds character
  • I want to accomplish this goal for both my grandfather and my father
  • I want prove to myself that I can, even when I feel like I can’t

When I successfully thru-hike the Appalachian Trail I will…

  • have hiked over 2,000 miles! wtf, that’s so awesome
  • have no regrets
  • continue writing and doing things in my life that are worth writing about
  • eat to my heart’s content at a Michelin Star restaurant (TREAT YO’SELF!!!)
  • plan my next adventure
  • maybe figure out what my next career choice will be?
  • continue can-ing instead of can’t-ing

The third list (“If I give up on the Appalachian Trail I will…”) gave me some trouble  because I’m typically a positive reinforcement kind-o-gal. While I recognize the value in creating a list like that for others, I don’t think it’ll be that effective for me. HYOH, right?

That being said, I might find myself making this list when I’m feeling the effects of a bad day! I’ll do anything to keep my head in the game and this list might be one of them.

But for now, I’ll focus on the positive.

Reward, reward, reward.

Like a dog.
