New Beginning
With only seven days before the start of my PCT journey, I have been finalizing everything I need for a successful journey. Out of pure boredom, and an effort to change my everyday norm, I decided to update my MP3 playlist. Ive opted to play tunes, to motivate myself at the start.
I made up my mind to add a few books and songs that I havent listened to in a while. As fate would have it, I stumbled across the song, New Beginnings, by Tracy Chapman. Her lyrics are beautifully written as she sings passionately about a desire to make a new beginning. Essentially, her words, start all over . . . rang especially true to me at that moment.
I have often shared my reasonings for hiking the PCT. Ultimately each decision stems from a desire to reconnect with me. Personally, I dont believe reconnection is possible without first release; the two are symbiotic. That being said I concluded, to embark on this new beginning I would start all over . . . I released my dreads.
Thus, deducting a few ounces from my pack. Now, I no longer need to carry additional hair care products, and to surprise my dreads weighed two pounds. Plus, I’m now less attractive to bugs, and an easier path for the wind to blow gently on my head, offering relief from the scorching Southern California heat.
Boldly sharing scars and all, I embrace this new beginning.

Crystal, you are a genuine hero! Have fun on the PCT! Before you go, listen to my minister’s lesson of today. She relates the cruxification/rebirth story to our life events where we are reborn better and stronger after going thru a challenge. Fits you to a “t”! The sermon you suggested did fit me, indeed. Thank you so much for sharing, and for your kindness.
Almost certain a baby started crying after looking at my face after I buzzed my head. The shape of your head is worlds better, scars and all. Best of luck on your upcoming journey, CGW!
Ha! I would have loved to witness that experience, and thank you.
You are beautiful! From one Trail Dame to another – GOOD LUCK!
Thanks. Peace and love.
Great story! You look great too! I hope you have a great hike! I’m looking forward to reading updates!
Thank you Melissa!
That was a bold step! Good luck on your journey(s)1
Congratulations on your second chance, decision to live healthy, your hike and that awesome shaved head! I loved your post and look forward to following your journey. I am shaving my head when I start in 2018, although I do already have short-short hair, too! I think it will be easier without hair in the desert for all the reasons you stated. It also means I will not have to worry about a haircut for awhile.
And you have a beautiful smile! Happy Trails!
