Rocks, snakes, shin splints and back spasms. Goodbye Pennsylvania!

I exited Pennsylvania on May 25th. I have to say it has been the toughest state so far on my 2018 NOBO thru-hike.

The rocks beat my feet up badly and shin splints took me off the the trail for two days.

Sitting in a hotel room for two days was very frustrating. Not only was I off trail but I couldn’t go anywhere due to the injury. I finally got over that and then the back spasms started. Some shorter hiking days and more diligent stretching took care of that.

This rattlesnake coiled and rattled me just past Dan’s Pulpit. I was looking for snakes on the rocks but this one was nestled in the leaves just off the trail.

I’d like to say the rocks stopped in Pennsylvania, but I really didn’t feel them dissipate until High Point shelter in New Jersey!

Here’s hoping for less injuries and easier terrain going forward!

Way to go! I thru hiked the AT in 1992. Now I am a 59 IT cubicle dweller who is planning a second thru hike when I retire.

As to your hike. Here is what is ahead. Hot dry New York. Waltzing through CT, MASS and Vermont. Then comes the Whites and the hut system that everyone hates. Then, Maine; The way life ought to be. Finally the last summit. You know, I still remember every step with fondness.
